With the beginning of the pandemic I found myself spending too much time with my smartphone and at some point I started to feel bored. As we all know there is something addicting of smartphones, but I really didn’t want to spend more time on Social Media. So, I started to search for apps that bring something valuable to my daily life.

I’m not saying that social media doesn’t bring anything. Of course it does, I get a lot of inspiration and I can be in contact with friends and family. But, I know that if I spend a lot of my time on Instagram or Facebook I start to feel a little depressed.

Without further due let’s start with the list of the best apps that you can download for free and that will help you improve your life!

Lumosity

If you want to train your brain by challenging it, this is one of the best apps to do it. Every day you have 3 free games for improving your memory, attention, flexibility, processing speed and problem-solving. The great aspect of this app is that it’s created with the help of scientists. They take cognitive training exercises developed by leading researchers, and then adapt them into easy-to-learn brain games. Literally it seems just a game that you download for having fun and I assure you that you will enjoy doing most of the exercise.

There is evidence that this type of app has the power to help your brain in the long term. Researchers in Newcastle and California used the brain-training app Lumosity to examine people’s ability to switch between two tasks. The results have shown that brain training can help some older people keep up with those in their 20s. “Some people, with substantial practice, can reverse the age-related decline in this task,” said Professor Karayanidis, of the University of Newcastle’s school of psychology.

Elevate

Elevate is an award-winning brain training tool designed to build communication and analytical skills. It has the same concept as Lumosity but in my opinion the graphics are much better. Like Lumosity, Elevate also has 3 games per day totally free, and it’s supported by research. Its games are designed in collaboration with experts and backed by independent analysis.

I recommend you download both of them and make a habit of practicing every day. If you manage to add both games to your routine you will be practicing 10 minutes per day while you have some fun.

Duolingo

“15 minutes a day can teach you a language. What can 15 minutes of Instagram do?” If you have the goal of learning a new language it is literally much better to spend your time in Duolingo than on social media, but let’s be fair. It’s not realistic that with only 15 minutes a day you can really learn a language. According to an investigation you’ll need approximately 800 hours to learn a new language. So, if you only practice 15 minutes a day it would take you 3200 days, basically 10 years. That’s not a good deal. Having said that, Duolingo is a great app but if you combined it with another learning method, like a language course or a personal teacher.

Feedly

If you want to follow several blogs but it’s difficult for you to keep track of all their posts, Feedly is the answer. You can add as many blogs as you want and have them in only one feed. So, next time that you have some free time to read you can choose from a single feed which article catches your attention.

Blinkist

Audiobooks are a great way to keep learning while you are cooking or taking a walk. And it’s much better if you can only listen to the key concepts of it. In Blinkist you will find thousands of book summaries in audio. But, if you don’t pay the premium version you only have one audiobook per day. Sometimes not having too many options is better. If you don’t like the book you can use it just to practice your English or just put some music on.

Udemy

This online learning platform is a great tool for having it on your phone. Not only because you can buy any course you want and download it. But also because you can find a lot of free courses.

By downloading the course that you are interested in, you can enjoy it everywhere and keep learning while you are travelling or waiting for someone.

Forest

When it’s time to concentrate it’s better to keep the phone away. A great option to control yourself of any temptation is this App. The idea behind it is that you establish the time that you want to concentrate on your task, and if you accomplish the goal you are planting a tree in your forest. But if you don’t you are cutting them, and that is not nice from you.

Hope you can try some of these apps for yourself. Now it is your turn, if you know of any other APPs that may be useful please comment them below.
